How to Prepare for a Job Interview

Q: Hi Kate! I have an important job interview coming up. What are your makeup suggestions for an interview? Thanks for your help!

Kate: Recently a girlfriend of mine went on a job interview for an executive assistant position. After shopping and coming up with some different ideas for make up, it dawned on me that more often than not women either over do it, or under do it when it comes to their makeup. Below find some tips on how to put your best face forward when interviewing for a corporate job*.

1.       Keep your skin fresh. When interviewing you don’t want your skin to be a distraction by looking too cakey or dry. The night before your interview do a small skin treatment with Pumpkin Enzyme Scrub and follow it with a thick lather of Moisture Rich Cream. If you are not super dry I’d try the Brightening Polish followed by Pure Hydration.
2.       Make your eyes pop naturally. I suggest keeping your Eye Shadow colors nude (try bamboo, twig and fawn) then line your upper and lower lash line with Precise Micro Eyeliner in black.  Try to keep the line SUPER tight to the lashes. Next, while looking down with your eyes, gently stamp some Eye Shadow in sable onto the inner rim of your upper lash line. This will make your eyes look laser sharp and awake.
3.       Don’t go crazy with mascara. Something I always find distracting is when someone has on too much mascara! You want your lashes to look naturally darker, and thicker but not overdone. For an interview you really want to focus on lightly emphasizing the beauty you already have!
4.       Keep cheeks cheerful. I like a pop of Blush in begonia on the apples of the cheeks, then blend nectar onto the cheekbones for added dimension. Bright and balanced cheeks will illuminate your entire complexion!
5.      Keep Lips Simple.  I suggest keeping your lips on the glossy side with light color. Nothing is worse than lipstick fading mid-interview or *gasp* lipstick on your the teeth. I like Gloss in naked but if you need a bit more color try Gloss in nude.
6.      Slightly fill in your brows. Don’t go overboard with dramatic eye brows… no one wants a mommy dearest sitting across the desk from them!

A few other basic tips:

  • Dress business casual or corporate. It’s almost always better to be overdressed than underdressed.
  • Don’t wear anything too tight and be sure that you are comfortable enough to sit and move around.
  • Keep your perfume and body lotion ever so lightly scented. Nothing is worse than choking your future employer with an extremely strong scent!

*The way you dress and present yourself should depend on the the job you are going for.  If you are in the beauty industry, then you know as well as I do that personality is key, and your makeup should express what type of artist you are.
